Roman republic essays

The Roman government (in its entire history from founding to fall) was a strange mix of a democracy and a republic. An interesting fact is that the people of Rome took many of their ideas of government from the Ancient Greeks.

The Romans chose a republic as their form of government to keep any one person from gaining too much power. Before the decision was made to have a republic there was a Roman king that abused his high power. He used his higher authority to get away with crimes, such as non consensual intercourse.

Roman Republic. The Roman Republic was the period of the ancient Roman civilization when the government operated as a republic. It began with the overthrow of the Roman monarchy, traditionally dated around 509 BC, and its replacement by a government headed by two consuls, elected annually by the citizens and advised by a senate.

As great as The Roman Republic was it had its weaknesses. The weakness of the Roman Republic political system was its foreign policies that constantly had the nation at war, which drained its resources and hampered its ability to govern itself.
